Pocket PC GAPI Benchmark

GAPI Benchmark For Pocket PCs

This is the official page for the latest benchmark for Pocket PCs! Created by ARP team member Javier Dávalos, the GAPI Benchmark is the first Pocket PC benchmark to test the GAPI (Game API) performance. But that's not all! Javier will be working with the rest of the team to add more features and tests to this exciting new benchmark.

In the future, this benchmark will not only test the GAPI performance of Pocket PCs but also other aspects like host and media transfer rates! If you have suggestions on how to further improve this benchmark, do let us know! We appreciate any comments and suggestions you may have.

Use & Distribution

This benchmark is freeware so you don't have to worry about evaluation periods or registration. Heck, we don't even force you to view Adware pop-ups! :)

You are also free to distribute this benchmark to whoever you want. However, we ask that you distribute them exactly as they have been packaged by us. Please do NOT change the contents of the archive, repackage the files or distribute them individually.

This benchmark is available in both RAR and ZIP compressed packages. Each package will contain the following files :-

  • GAPIBench.exe (the benchmark itself)
  • gx.dll (GAPI 1.2)
  • readme.txt (documentation of the benchmark)
  • bull.3ds
  • cowskin.tga

If any of the above contents are missing, please report this matter to us!

Latest Version

The latest release version of GAPI Benchmark is GAPI Benchmark 2.0.

Features Of This Release

  • CPU Integer speed test
  • CPU Floating Point (using casting) speed test
  • Display speed test
  • Flicker test
  • 3D test
  • Memory and CPU score
  • Real floating Point (without casting) speed test

Requirements

GAPI Benchmark will run on all Pocket PCs using the StrongARM, MIPS or SH3 processors.

Please note that GAPI Benchmark requires the presence of GAPI (gx.dll). So, check and make sure you have the latest version of GAPI, which is version 1.2. Certain Pocket PCs may not ship with GAPI installed.

If you don't have GAPI 1.2 installed or if GAPI Benchmark issues an error message about missing components, just copy GAPI 1.2 (included with every GAPI Benchmark package) to your Pocket PC's Windows directory.

Installation

There is no installer for this benchmark so you will need to copy the files manually to the Pocket PC. There are two methods :-

Method 1

  • create a new directory called GAPIBench inside the Program Files directory.
  • copy all the files into this directory
  • create a shortcut to the GAPIBench.exe file and then move it to the \Windows\Start Menu\ directory so that you can instantly run the benchmark.

Method 2

  • create a new directory called GAPIBench inside the Program Files directory.
  • copy the files bull.3ds and cowskin.tga into this directory.
  • copy the GAPIBench.exe file to the Start Menu so that you can access it easily.
  • the only difference between method 1 and method 2 is that you don't have to create any shortcut in method 2.

To be safe, you can also copy the included gx.dll file (which is GAPI 1.2) into the Windows directory of your Pocket PC. GAPI Benchmark requires this file to function.

Running The Benchmark

  1. Before you run the benchmark, you should disable any software that have been set to run in the background (i.e. PocketNav). You should also remove them temporarily from Startup.

  2. Then, soft-reset the Pocket PC so that nothing is running in the background while the benchmark is running.

  3. Once your Pocket PC has finished initializing, run GAPI Benchmark.

  4. At the bottom left hand corner, click on "Click here to start" menu button.

  5. The top of the menu will show you all the test choices. Click on the test name to start the test you want.

  6. The test will run and then disappear once it has completed.

  7. Continue running as many tests as you want. Because GAPI Benchmark precaches the tests, rerunning the same tests or running different tests consecutively without resetting the Pocket PC WON'T artificially inflate the scores.

  8. At the end of all the tests, select Results Summary to bring up the final results.

  9. If you see N/A YET, that means the test was not run and therefore, there's no result to display.
