Chunksize Optimization Guide

Testing Procedure

Eleven different Chunksize values were used - 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192 bytes. The VCache was dynamically managed by Win98. The benchmark suite included WinBench 99, Winstone 99, Turok : Dinosaur Hunter's timedemo, X Demo and the Half Life Torture timedemo.

The standard Win98 bus mastering driver was used with DMA transfer enabled. The hard disk was fully defragmented before each test run. Each test run consists of benchmarking all eleven chunksizes in a sequence using one of the benchmarks with a reboot and a change of settings between each test. Three test runs were completed and the results of each setting averaged before being analysed and presented here.

Note that because Half Life timedemos will try to play the demo back at the speed that it was recorded at (20fps for Torture.dem), the maximum framerate achievable for Torture.dem is 20 fps. Thus, using Torture.dem to benchmark a system's performance is still valid as long as the results are all less than 20fps.
