Functionally, well... it's a printer so you just install the
drivers into your Windows-based PC and then you can either print
using the IR port, if available, or just plug in the serial cable
and go. Actually, I didn't try this feature because I was more
interested in using it with my Pocket PC. After all, I was
trying to see if it was a viable solution for my mobile
applications.
Drivers for Palm OS-based devices are already included
in the driver disk for the printer. In order to use this printer
with a Pocket PC, you'll need to get some additional
software. I used FieldSoftware's
PrintPocket CE. This program allows you to print your Notes,
Pocket Word, RTF files, plain TXT files and e-mails using the
printer.
Output was clear and crisp as expected from a thermal printer,
with just one slight problem. Because A6 paper is narrower
compared to A4 paper, you're going to have to use a lot of paper
to print your documents. Not a big problem if you're expecting
that to happen but you need to be aware that you can only have
about 2.5 meters of paper in this thing.
I didn't time the printing speed but on the SiPix
website, it's stated as two pages per minute. During my tests,
I printed out something like a grocery list so I had very little
text to print but I guess two pages per minute is pretty accurate.
On a side note, FieldSoftware
also provides an SDK for developers to directly access the printer
so that they can print out customized reports, which is great.
That is if you're a developer. :) |
