USB Clik! Drive & HipZip MP3 Player

HipZip Without Iomegaware

The only good use for Iomegaware, when using Clik! disks, is that it formats the disks back to their proper size. Formatting a Clik! disk with the Windows format utility will shave about a MB off the available storage space. But then, that's not what you would do all the time. What you WILL do is use the HipZip to transport files around and I don't think a lot of people would appreciate you installing Iomegaware into their systems.

So here's a quick step-by-step guide on how to enable the HipZip in a Win98/SE system without installing Iomegaware.

  1. Stick the Iomegaware CD into the system's CD drive and plug the HipZip into the system's USB jack and turn on the HipZip.

  2. Windows will tell you that new hardware is detected.

  3. When given the choice, select "Display A List Of Drivers To Select" instead of the Search for drivers option.

  4. When you see the Select hardware type screen, choose 'USB Controllers' (as shown below) and click Next.

Hardware Wizard Screen (9k)

  1. When you see the familiar hardware list window, click 'Have Disk'.

  2. The directory which houses the files which we need are on the CD. Go to 'Drivers\9X\98USB'.

  3. Select the folder and click OK and you should see the device as shown below.

Our Device (5k)

  1. Click Next and viola! The system should now be able to see the HipZip as a removable drive.

Some interesting things to note are :-

  • The files in that directory are quite small so you should be able to copy the folder to a floppy disk and take it with you.

  • There are drivers for other Iomega devices in the same CD. Perhaps they can all be installed in the same fashion.
