CNetX FlashFormat

Have we found such a utility in CNetX's latest offering - the CNetX Flash Format? CNetX calls it the only full featured storage card management utility for Pocket PC users. It certainly appears to do more than just format the flash card. Here's a list of the Flash Format's features :-

  • format ATA-compliant storage devices
  • verify integrity of your storage cards
  • get detailed storage and file statistics
  • create AutoRun storage cards
  • create digital camera compatible cards
  • automatic card detection

But how well do these features work? Let's run through each feature of Flash Format and find out! :)

Installation

Installation, like with many new Pocket PC applications, is a breeze. Run the installer and Flash Format is automatically installed into your Pocket PC. The utility is installed as a Control Panel applet so it's loaded into the main memory of your Pocket PC. It has a small memory footprint of about 90KB so you don't have to worry about losing too much RAM to it.

Running & Terminating It

To use Flash Format, just go to Settings and select the System tab. You will see the Flash Format icon there. All you need to do is click on it and it will open up.

Compared to the previous version I tested (version 1.01), I no longer encountered any problem opening or closing this version of Flash Format. If you remember, I reported that version 1.01 of Flash Format required you to click its icon twice in order to get it started. And quitting it was often impossible without the intervention of a task manager like PocketNav.

CNetX has already resolved those issues with version 1.20 so you don't have to worry about them. A single click on its icon is now enough to bring Flash Format up. As for closing it, you don't even have to click on the ok button on the top right hand corner. Just shift the screen focus to another application and Flash Format quits automatically!
