ASUS CUSL2-C

The Motherboard

The ASUS CUSL2-C is a medium-sized motherboard. There are 6 PCI slots with one shared with the CNR slot at the edge of the motherboard. The ATX power connector is located close to the printer port while the three SDRAM slots are located in between the CPU socket and the drive connectors.

The socket itself is large cooler-friendly as the capacitors are placed reasonably far away from the socket. The metal socket lever does not protrude from the socket so big coolers like Taisol and GlobalWin WBK38 will be able to fit this motherboard. The Memory Controller Hub (MCH) of the Intel 815EP chipset is cooled by the infamous 'greenie' heatsink.

The last PCI slot is unusually small or should I say thinner. But it works like the other bigger PCI slots. There is no built-in sound card or video card in this motherboard but the audio codec is optionally available. There is a missing COM Port 2, usually found below the parallel port. Obviously, there is an external COM port 2 connector to be plugged into the motherboard.

The really thin PCI slot

Although this motherboard features JumperFree setup, but ASUS still added the DIP switches. This is to prevent beginners from interfering with the BIOS settings. The DIP switches allow you to change limited FSB settings from 3 to 5MHz increments, instead of 1MHz increments in the BIOS menu.

In addition, one of the RAM slot is located in an awkward position, where the white clip is blocked by the AGP slot.

In this picture, you can see that the clip on DIMM1 is blocked by the AGP slot
