| Intel 440BX Motherboards
Intel 440BX-based motherboards have been
around for a long time now. Practically every motherboard manufacturer will
have several
different versions of what's basically the same thing - an Intel 440BX-powered
motherboard. Naturally, to compete against so many rivals, each and every motherboard manufacturer
has to come up with a way to distinguish its 440BX offerings from the others in the
market.
Some manufacturers choose to target the low-end/value market by adopting a minimalist
approach in their designs while others prefer to differentiate their 440BX offerings by
adding more and more features. ABIT is one of the latter. Ever since ABIT burst big time into the overclocking scene with its
BH6 motherboard, the company has been actively and
continuously improving on its 440BX motherboards. With their "Yes, it's possible!"
attitude, they have produced a whole plethora of motherboards based solely on the 440BX
chipset, each better than the previous.
Even now with the replacement of the 440BX by the i815 chipset just
around the corner (I personally don't consider the i820 to be the true
successor of the 440BX legacy), there are still 440BX motherboards being
manufactured. Why? Well, while i815-based motherboards will soon be coming
out, the 440BX chipset still offers unparalleled
stability and performance for the Intel platform for now.
While remaining the most overclockable chipset today, the 440BX is also
very reliable. All major and most, if not all, minor bugs have already been
identified and corrected. In addition, driver support is solid and its price
is low, making motherboards based on it highly affordable. All this has kept
interest in this venerable chipset alive. That's why while ABIT already has
a line of solid Intel 440BX motherboards, they still continue to improve on
the previous designs. Their latest contributions to
their 440BX line are the ABIT BE6-II and the BF6. Today, we will be taking a
look at the BE6-II and see what ABIT has to offer in its latest 440BX
motherboard.
