| Noisy USR Modem?
Normally, it's easy to turn the volume of your USR modem down.
Just go to the properties page of the modem and turn the speaker
volume down. Unfortunately, in some cases, the option may not be
available. So, here's how you can turn the volume down if you
can't adjust your USR modem speaker's volume using the
conventional method.
- Go to the Control Panel.
- Click on the Phone and Modem Options.

- Under Phone and Modem Options, choose the Modems tab

- Choose the appropriate modem and click on the Properties
button.
- Click on the Advanced tab and you should see the
screen below.

- Now, type in the
box under Extra initialization commands one of
the following commands :-
M0 Speaker always off
M1 Speaker on during
connection
M2 Speaker always on
L0 Softest volume
L1 Soft volume
L2 Medium volume
L3 Loudest volume
- Click OK and your USR modem should now be set with
the new volume level.
Notes
- I've only tested it on my USR Sportster 56K modem. It will most likely work for other USR modems
as well, including the internal modem or Winmodem. Please let
me know if it works.
- Please do not attempt to add the command for non-USR or TI chipset-based modems.
Doing so may cause problems but it's unlikely to damage your modem.
