How To Change Data Monitored By Task Manager

Different Performance Statistics

Task Manager is really quite useful in monitoring the system's performance and resource use. However, by default, it doesn't monitor as many performance parameters as most would like. Here's how you can change the performance parameters monitored by Task Manager.

  1. Open Task Manager by pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del and then clicking on the Task Manager button.

  2. Click on the Processes tab and you will see the performance statistics, just like the example below :-

  1. Now, click on the View menu and select the Select Columns... option.

  1. The following screen will appear. Here you can remove or add any performance parameter you want Task Manager to monitor for you.

  1. Click OK and you can see the new list of monitored parameters in Task Manager.

Notes
  • If you accidentally double-click the Processes screen area (the gray border), you may get the screen below. To revert back, just double-click anywhere on the gray border, as shown in the example below.

  • Incidentally, the above feature allows quick access to the Processes screen. After the screen has been set to the clean Processes screen above, clicking the Task Manager button will immediately bring up the screen above instead of the other Task Manager screens.

  • You can also add a link to the Task Manager in the Startup folder and set it to Minimize. This loads up Task Manager as a green icon in the tray at start up, which monitors your CPU usage. Double-clicking the icon immediately brings up Task Manager. This requires some initial work but will make it easier for you to access Task Manager. BTW, the Task Manager is usually found here - Drive:\WINNT\system32\taskmgr.exe

  • Task Manager uses about 1.8MB of memory so if you are short of RAM, you might not want to load Task Manager automatically at start up.
