Access To More Windows Components

How Do I Remove Pinball???

You may notice that while Windows 2000 has a sleek add and remove utility, lots of Windows components that we would normally have access to in Win9x are missing. As it is, if you have installed Pinball but would like to remove it now, well, you just can't uninstall it because it's not even listed in the list of Windows components.

Fortunately, thanks to a tip from Slick Rick, we now have a way to get to those components. Here's how to do it.

  1. First, we should check the original components listed in the add and remove utility.

  2. Go to Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs.

  1. The following screen should pop up.

  1. Click on the Add/Remove Windows Components button (as shown above) and the screen below will pop up.

  1. As you can see, there aren't many components available to add or remove.

  2. Now, go to the drive:/WINNT/Inf/ folder and look for a file called sysoc.inf.

  1. Open the sysoc.inf file and delete all occurrence of HIDE with a comma (HIDE,) in the file. Remember to back up the file first!

  1. Now, close the file and save the changes.

  2. Go back to the Add/Remove Programs screen and click on the same Add/Remove Windows Components button.

  3. Voila! The Windows Components Wizard now shows many new categories.

  1. Let's check out the Accessories and Utilities category. Click Next and you will see even more categories!

  1. Let's check out the Games section. Hmm... there we go. You can now remove any of the games listed by unchecking the checkbox and clicking OK.

  1. Before we go, let's have a look at the Multimedia section.

  1. As you can see, this tip allows us access to a whole lot more Windows 2000 components than is allowed by default. Have fun weeding out those useless components that you installed!
