How To Initialize Your Modem After Booting Up

Using The Add/Remove Hardware Wizard
  1. Turn on your modem.

  2. Open up Control Panel.

  3. Select the Phone and Modem Options.

  1. In the screen that pops up, select the Modems tab and you should see the following screen :-

  1. Click on the Add... button and the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard pops up.

  1. Click on the Next button (see above). Windows 2000 will now query all COM ports for your modem.

  1. Within a minute, Windows 2000 will show you the following screen.

  1. You will notice that the Windows 2000 states that it was unable to detect any modem. Don't worry. What it meant was that it didn't detect any new modem. However, the detection process was all it took to initialize your installed modem. So, while you get the failure message above, your modem has actually already been initialized.

  2. Now, click on the Cancel button (see above) and you will see that the modem is now available for use. In this case, my USR 56K modem can be seen as attached to COM1.

Notes
  • Remember to turn on your modem before you click on the Next button. It's no use if your modem is powered off while Windows 2000 is scanning for it. After initialization, you can turn off the modem and it will still be available for use later.
