Command Prompt In Any Directory

Folder Option Method

Here's an alternative method which may prove superior to the registry fix method. Here's how you can get the command prompt to appear in any directory you want... instantly!

  1. Open up Windows Explorer and select Folders Options..., which is under the Tools menu.

  1. In the Folders Options screen, select the File Types tab.

  1. Go down the list of file types and look for the Folder file type. It's grouped with the other file types with the extension of N/A.

  2. Once you find it, select it and click on the Advanced button and the screen below will pop up.

  1. Now, click on the New... button.

  1. In the new screen, type in as shown above although you can substitute View In DOS with Command Prompt or any other names you fancy. Here's the important text for you to cut and paste - cmd.exe /k "cd %L"

  2. Click OK and the Edit File Type screen should now show the new action.

  1. Clear all remaining screens and try out the new action.

  1. Here's what happened when I clicked on the View In DOS option with the E:\Adrian's Rojak Pot\Reviews\3DLabs_Permedia3\ directory selected :-

  1. See? Using this method, I'm immediately transported to the E:\Adrian's Rojak Pot\Reviews\3DLabs_Permedia3\ directory without even typing a single letter of that path!

  2. Note that this method works with both folders in the Folders bar as well as the folders shown in the main Explorer window (as shown above).
