Warning!       02:15 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Ever since I posted the Casio E-125 Overclocking Guide, I have received reports from several overclockers that after performing the procedure, they lost the backlight of the touch screen. Without the backlight, it's impossible to see anything on the screen except under strong light.

The reason for this is due to improper handling of the white ribbon cable that supplies power to the touch screen's backlight. Remember the white ribbon cable attached to the brown clip? To disconnect it, you must NOT grab the cable using pliers in order to pull it out. Doing so will tear the delicate wires inside the cable. You can easily remove the cable by pushing out the brown clip using the tip of the screwdriver. This releases the white ribbon, thus allowing you to remove it easily.

I have now updated the Casio E-125 Overclocking Guide with short notes about this problem. Check it out for more details!

ExtremeOverclocking reviewed the Vantec FCE-6030D cooler! Here's a snippet - "It may be smaller than most others, but it packs quite a punch! It also has all the great qualities that you would expect to see from Vantec."

Phear Factory posted a review of the Volcano 2 cooler from ThermalTake!

Rizenet posted a review and how-to article on the server-size case window from TweakBox.com!

The Overclocker Cafe just finished up a review of the most unusually-designed cooler ever seen - the Zalman CNPS 3100! Here's a snip - "As far as all out performance goes, the Zalman CNPS3100 heatsink flat sucks.  But that isn't the main thrust of what Zalman was trying to achieve with this sink.  At almost every juncture you will have noticed that decreasing the sound was of primary concern to Zalman.  Look at the sink's name for goodness sakes!  " Computer Noise Prevention System." Incidentally, our very own Ken Ng has also finished his review of the same cooler! It just remains for me to edit and post it!

TweakFiles released X-Setup 6.1 which they call the ultimate mother of all Windows tweaking utilities!

GideonTech posted a review of the Monster One cooler from OCZ! Here's a snip - "Measuring about 65 X 75mm, this sample provides some adequate cooling for your oc'ing needs. But then again, does size really matter?"

The Heatsink Guide posted an article on why copper shims may not sense at all! Here's a provocative clip! - "Copper shims become more and more popular, but do the make sense? I think they don't, and I even think that in some cases they may even decrease cooling of the CPU core."

AmazingCam VQ680       02:30 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

It's time for another great review by Ken Ng! This time, Ken checks out the ViewQuest AmazingCam VQ680 4-in-1 PC Camera! You may not have heard of it before but whenever you see the new Intel Pocket PC Camera, you are actually seeing an AmazingCam with a different casing. :)

So, read the review and find out what made Intel choose the ViewQuest AmazingCam VQ680 as the OEM winner for its Pocket PC Camera project! Here's a clip of the review :-

"After using the camera for over three weeks, the battery meter hasn't even registered a drop at all! This is simply amazing. It is said that the batteries can last over 3000 snapshots in normal mode! That makes the AmazingCam VQ680 one of the most power- efficient digital cameras out there."

Incidentally, the review also features a short movie clip of Ken Ng! So, if you wanna see how Ken looks like, click here! There's also a "bonus" page but I won't tell what's in there! :)

FlipOut PDA Case Review       02:25 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Do you own a PDA? Well, if you do, you will be very interested in our latest review! In this review, Marauder takes a look at the FlipOut PDA case which demonstrates some truly unique features. Here, check out a clip of the review :-

"The body of the case is made out of waterproof nylon so if water does get on the case (as it will, especially when you're washing your hands),  you just need to brush it off because the water won't seep into the fabric.

But that doesn't mean you can hose it down! It'll help protect your PDA from water but that won't make it a fish. This is great because some cases absorb water and either damage themselves internally or worse, allow the water to seep through the material and onto your PDA."

For more details on the case and why it's called FlipOut, check the review out!

Rizenet took a look at the latest CPU shims from CoolerGuys! Here's a blurb - "They are laser-cut for accuracy and are non-electrically conductive. But how do they stack up to the Copper Shims?

Computer Chaos compares the GlobalWin WBK38 with their modified ThermalTake Volcano II! Here's a snip - "Well it was a very close battle all the way through. The GlobalWin WBK38 wins out in all test results but only by slim margins. The Volcano II performs just about as well once you pop a Delta on top and is smaller and more compact than the GlobalWin.... so I would say here are the numbers you decide which one works for you."

The Overclocker Cafe just finished up a quick review of some case fan kits as well as heatsink cooling packages from ThermalTake!

Chillblast reviews the Silverado from Noise Control! Here's a blurb - "It has four settings and is not the super cooler that every-one thinks it is. The real power of this unit lies elsewhere and frankly I am glad that we are getting away from brain drilling Deltas!"

Now In LIT Format!       02:10 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

I have been spending the last few days meddling with MobiPocket Publisher 3.0 in an attempt to create a BIOS Optimization e-Guide. Made a mess initially because MobiPocket Publisher appears to write to the source files as well. So, learn from my mistake and backup your source files just in case MobiPocket Publisher messes them up.

There were also some complications with the conversion of bullet lists and tables. So, I installed the latest version of MobiPocket Publisher (3.0.1) and the bullet list problem seems to have been resolved. The tables, however, still won't render when the guide is viewed on a Pocket PC. In the end, I resorted to converting the table into a picture and using that picture instead.

Anyhow, I eventually managed to create a working e-guide based on the Integrated Peripherals section of the BIOS Optimization Guide. Nothing fancy, really. Still can't get the cover page right but it's a start. :)

So, if you have Microsoft Reader for PC or Pocket PC, check out the e-guide I just created. You can find it under the Downloads section. It will make a great reference source, especially when used with the Pocket PC. Please post any comments or suggestions you may have regarding this e-guide so that I can improve on it in future revisions.

Thanks and enjoy the e-guide! :)

Rizenet posted their review of the VisionTek GeForce3 graphics card! Here's a snip - "The VisionTek board itself is based on the standard GeForce3 design - 64MB of 3.8ns DDR SDRAM operating at 230MHz (460MHz DDR), and the GeForce3 GPU operating at 200MHz. One thing I was happy to see put back onto the card was TV-Out, provided by a Conexant BT869 decoder. Many GeForce2's didn't come with TV-Out except those in the higher price bracket, and it's nice to see VisionTek include one despite trying to keep the price down."

iPAQ Low On Juice?       05:00 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

My brother, Jason, recently plunked down his hard-earned cash for a spanking new Compaq iPAQ H3660 Pocket PC with 64MB of RAM (Oohhh...). But immediately, he noticed a BIG problem - the iPAQ would only run for an hour and a half! So, he thought "defective battery" and Compaq promptly replaced the unit.

However, the replacement unit was barely better than the first unit! It now lasts just over 2 hours with minimal activity and the backlight set to minimum! Wow! Is that fantastic or what? Even my old E-115 can do 5 hours, no sweat.

Compaq and several other sites are reporting that the new iPAQ lasts 5-6 hours. But Jason says this isn't the case with his Pocket PC. I wonder if Compaq is supplying certain regions with substandard parts. Remember when they would only supply serial cradles with their original iPAQs in Asia?

Officially, their position is that they chose to do so in the belief that no one here has any USB port (huh??!!!). In fact, they claimed that they have had to open up the iPAQ packages and replace each original USB cradle with a serial cradle before releasing them into the Asian market! Personally, I think no one wanted the serial cradles (obviously...) and so, they chose to dump them into the Asian market instead of just writing them off.

If you have a similar battery problem with the iPAQ, please do let us know. We want to see if the problem is widespread or merely limited to certain areas. Feel free to add any comments you may have about the iPAQ H3660 too! Thanks!

Pika Computes! posted a heatsink roundup!

VoidYourWarranty just finished their review of the Thermalright SK6 heatsink! Here's a clip - "Two things will immediately strike you about the Thermalright SK6: its copper construction and its delicate design of interlocking thin fins. It is almost as if there are vertebrae on either edge of the heatsink where they interlock. The overall fit and finish is excellent, and I assume that these are hand-built due to the intricacy of the unit. The heatsink looks big in the pictures I have seen of it on the web, but it is actually quite small in size."

The Overclocker Cafe reviewed a cable that allows you to monitor your fan speed and enable the shut CPU down option if no fan detected option while powering off your power supply!

Speedguide.net just posted a new article on Satellite Communications for Internet Access! Here's a snip - "So you're waaaaaaay out in the country, and neither DSL nor Cable is an option. Like say ..in Kosova. Or Bosnia. Or, God forbid, North Dakota. Perhaps on a ship. You'd like to get the internet, but carrier pigeon seems to be your only option. Wherever you are, if you're north of the equator and have a view of the visible sky to the south of you, you may have another option. You can probably get internet ...via Satellite. Yes, just like Wolf Bliitzer and James Bond you too can have nearly instant communications with the vast internet."

Before You Undo The Procedure       04:55 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Have you tried the Casio E-125 overclocking procedure yet? If so, beware of Microsoft Transcriber. I don't know if this happens only with an overclocked processor but whenever I select Transcriber, it randomly causes Microsoft Reader to crash with an error message. Games like Metalion also crashes with Transcriber selected.

I have no idea why. But this random crashes may cause you to believe that the processor cannot take the boost in clockspeed. This is not true. My overclocked processor is running fine, as far as I can see. The crashes only happens when you have selected Transcriber before using Microsoft Reader or the affected games.

The workaround? Easy. Select Character Recognizer or Keyboard before running Reader or those games.

So, if certain software is crashing on your overclocked E-125 all the time, try disabling Transcriber before running that software. If the crashes go away, you have found your culprit. There's no need to start cracking open the E-125 at the first sign of "instability" to lower its clockspeed. :)

VoidYourWarranty put together a little roundup of the best 60mm fans they had around them! Here's a clip - "There unfortunately is still no substitute in terms of pure performance for a Delta 38 CFM fan.  However, the gap is now much smaller than it used to be.  My Sunon 23.5 CFM fan was simply unacceptable to me when I was using a Taisol heatsink as I would get lockups and crashes on hot days.  I don't think that I would have had that problem with either the Thermaltake or the Delta 30CFM fan, as 30-31 CFM seems to provide more than enough airflow to get great cooling out of heatsinks."

32MB Of ROM       05:10 PM IDT     Adrian Wong

Compaq is shipping its new 64MB iPAQ H3660 and some iPAQ H3630 with 32MB of ROM. There's even a report of Compaq flashing the ROM with LinuxOS in addition to WinCE 3.0!

However, the specification sheets of all Compaq iPAQs will still only list the size of their ROM as 16MB. This is Compaq's marketing strategy - they want to get rid of their inventory of iPAQs with 16MB of ROM before "releasing" their iPAQs with 32MB of ROM.

So, if you are in the market for an iPAQ, make sure you get one with 32MB of ROM. Not only will that enable you to run that LinuxOS that have been rumoured to be included in the ROM, it will also allow the possibility of upgrading to the next version of the WinCE OS! In any case, don't get suckered into buying an iPAQ with 16MB of ROM when Compaq has already started shipping iPAQs with 32MB of ROM! :)

It is a sexy looking little number that comes in kit form."

The Overclocker Cafe just finished their review of the Thermaltake Dragon ORB 3! Please Postpone Your Downloads!       04:50 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

The server that ARP is on has been under severe strain these few days. Many people have reported getting incorrect links and even incorrect pages! This is because the server is being overloaded!

According to the server stats, there are about 13 attempted logons per second! That translates into about 1.1 million logons a day! Now, most of these connections are direct connections to download the BIOS Optimization PDF and LIT eGuides. That's why a lot of bandwidth has been used up, thus denying access to other visitors.

So, if you are here to download the eGuides, please belay that for the moment. Try downloading it several days later to leave some bandwidth for other visitors who are here to read the articles. Let's try to relieve the load on the server. If this situation continues, I will have to remove the eGuides. :(

For those of you who are getting all sorts of errors with links or pages, please try reloading the affected page. That should do the trick... if there's enough bandwidth...

And here's a snip of the review :-

"I actually did a count of the number of fins to find out exactly how many there are! Well, there are 58 fins altogether. Talk about surface area! Nothing beats the CNPS3100 at that - the CNPS3100 sports an amazing 2800cm2 surface area! And with a thermal resistance of 0.28o C/W?! That's just unbelievable."

ComputerChaos compared the NVIDIA Detonator 12.41 driver against the Detonator 12.42 Beta driver!

The Overclocker Cafe just finished their review of the Swiftech MC-642 cooler! Snip, snip - "In terms of overall quality and performance you simply cannot beat this sink.  Downside is that it is $80.  But a high end heatsink will run you $40-$60 so you can always say, "since I'm spending X, I may as well go ahead and get the best."  Remember that these results were obtained with the 53 CFM fan and that there is a 68 CFM Delta fan out there for this thing.  I can only imagine what another 25% of airflow would do."

GideonTech reviewed the Black Hydraulic Full Tower Case! Here's a snip - "Well, I had to play with the hydraulic face for the first 20 minutes checking to make sure it came down smooth (And it was really fun to play with). Didn't seem to see any problems except for space, so I decided to toss in a standard LiveDrive to make sure the volume knobs cleared. They JUST made it, so if you have a Custom FanBus your switches may or may not clear."

The Barber       03:15 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Here's something I got in my mailbox from a friend :-

One day a Florist goes to a Barber for a haircut. After the cut, he goes to pay the Barber and the Barber replies: 'I am sorry, I cannot accept money from you, I am doing a Community Service'. The Florist is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, there is a Thank you Card and a dozen roses waiting at his door.

A Cop goes for a haircut and he also goes to pay the Barber and the barber replies: 'I am Sorry, I cannot accept money from you, I am doing a Community Service. The Cop is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, there is a Thank you Card and a dozen donuts waiting at his door.

A Singaporean guy goes for a haircut and he also goes to pay the Barber and the barber replies: 'I am Sorry, I cannot accept money from you; I am doing a Community Service'. The Singaporean guy is of course very happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the Barber goes to open his shop, guess what he finds there - A dozen Singaporean people waiting for a free haircut.

If you are a Singaporean, don't be offended. I posted it just to lighten up the day. :)

Still Overloaded!       01:20 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Wow... I can't even get into ARP myself! I keep getting the error message that there are too many people connected to the site. It seems to be getting worse even though Crowz increased the number of simultaneous connections yesterday to 9000 users!

In view of this, I have decided to remove the PDF version of the BIOS Optimization Guide for the moment as it appears to be the largest gobbler of bandwidth! When we started posting downloadable versions of the BIOS Optimization Guide, I didn't expect the server to be crippled. So, I will keep it offline for the moment and re-release it later.

Sorry for the inconvenience but I cannot afford to have the site crippled just because of a single eGuide. :)

  • NVIDIA nForce chipset
  • 256-bit GPU onboard
  • DDR SDRAM slots
  • Supports AMD 266MHz FSB CPUs

Rizenet posted a guide on how to install blowholes in your computer! A snip? - "The first thing you need to do is study your case to find where you want to locate your blow hole. Popular spots for blow holes are on the top, front, sides and back of the case; generally near vital components. If you already have a fan you plan on installing, you can easily test fit it to find which mounting spots work. If you do not have a fan, I suggest you make a template of the standard fan sizes to assist in measurement. Standard fan sizes are 80mm, 92mm, 120mm, and 25mm in width, although some 120mm fans may be 38mm in width."

The Overclocker Cafe posted their review of the Vantec CCK-6035D cooler! Here's a clip - "The world famous Vantec clip wasn't there.  With the two banks of fins, there was simply no way to utilize the Vantec "super clip."  It looks to be a pretty standard clipping mechanism.  Looks can be quite deceiving however.  While the other Vantec clip is our favorite, we found this simple latch mechanism to be remarkably easy to use.  It worked great without the typical prying with multiple screwdrivers a lot of us have gotten used to with other cooling products.  It is almost as easy to use as the original Vantec clip.  I don't think Vantec could make a bad clip if they wanted to. "

Pearl Harbour Vs. Titanic       03:25 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Here's something for you to laugh at today :) :-

A Chinese man walked into a pub in New York with his pal. He says to his pal, "Hey! That's Jurassic Park Director Steven Spielberg over there! God, I wish he'll come over to say hi".

Spielberg suddenly walked over and gave the man a heavy punch on the nose.

"Hey!! What's that for?!"

"You bloody Japanese killed my granddad when you bombed Pearl Harbour!"

"I'm not Japanese! I'm Chinese!"

"Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, you're all the same!" Spielberg walks back.

The Chinese man calmly walks over and gives Spielberg a really heavy punch on the face.

"What... !?!"

"YOU BLOODY AMERICAN! YOU SANK THE TITANIC!"

"No, no, an iceberg sank the Titanic!"

"Iceberg, Carlsberg, Spielberg, you're all the same!"

Power Hungry iPAQ?       03:10 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

More on the iPAQ battery life issue. Jason ran a battery life test on his brand new Compaq iPAQ H3660 Pocket PC using KeepAlive. He set the backlight to the lowest setting and kept any activity to the minimum. Mostly, he left it untouched and here are the results :-

21:32:53 - Keep Alive 1.03 started...
21:32:53 - AC Status: Online
21:32:53 - Battery Status: High
21:33:08 - AC Status: Offline
21:33:23 - Battery Status: High
....
23:11:02 - Battery Status: Low (<20%)
....
23:46:50 - Battery Status: Critical

As you can see, the battery takes only 1 hour and 39 minutes to drain to 20%! And another 35 minutes later, the battery life has reached the critical level! That means it only takes about 2 hours and 14 minutes to almost completely drain the H3660's battery!

That's really pathetic! If you have an iPAQ H3660 as well, we would really appreciate any comments you may have regarding your iPAQ's battery life. I have no idea how many times he has changed his iPAQ by now but every replacement iPAQ seems to be afflicted by this problem. I wonder if this problem is restricted to only Asia. Please let us know your experience with Compaq's new 64MB iPAQ H3660. Thanks! :)

GideonTech just posted their review of the ThermoEngine V60-4225 cooler! Here's their blurb - "The fan sits on top of this plastic housing, which I think does not channel any kind of air into the heatsink itself, but rather just provides a nice base with holes so the fan can be screwed in. With a max of 5500 RPMs and about 32 CFMs, this fan can cause quite a stir. The difference between the v60-4225 and the v60-4210 is the rated speed of that fan. This version's fan is rated at double the speed! Hopefully this can create some good airflow for us."

Chillblast reviewed the Akasa Silver Mountain cooler! Here's a clip - "Once we had freed our prize from it's plastic tormentor, we sat back and marveled at the unit. Mmmmmmmmshiny. Here's a snip - "Window kits are nothing new but not too many folks have them.  Personally, I have wanted one for a while but just didn't want to go to the trouble of buying Plexiglas and plastic to cut, measure, curse, just to have the parts to build one.  Naturally, when the Cooler Guys sent a prefab everything you need window kit over, it was everything I could do not to jump up and down."
In addition, Dean Barker of The Overclocker Cafe is going to give this kit away in celebration for the upcoming birth of his baby son! Wow! :)

Corrupted PDF File?       01:45 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

If you have downloaded the BIOS Optimization PDF eGuide and found that there are missing tables and error messages upon opening the eGuide, please note that the eGuide was created using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat - 5.0. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 to read the eGuide properly.

BIOS Guide Download       00:50 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Looks like the server is getting jammed again... In order to help you download the files faster, I have created compressed RAR and ZIP archives of the BIOS Optimization Guide (why didn't I think of this earlier???). They are now much smaller so you can download faster.

In addition, Matt was nice enough to mirror the files on another server (Geocities!). So, if the download is too slow, you can try the mirror server. So, click here to get your copy of the guide!

The Overclocker Cafe discovered an alternative chip removal method! Here's a snip - "Our trusty GeForce2 GTS card that died on us some days ago, refused to give up it's chip so we could make a key chain.  In our frustration we discovered a method with coupled with a Thermal Amplifier, that got the chip right off."

News From The Net

VoodooSource is giving away a eVGA GeForce2 MX at the end of July! Go take a look!

Rizenet posted a review of eVGA's GeForce2 MX 400 TwinView Plus card! Snip - "The overclocking screen is the most intriguing though; even though eVGA lists the memory at 183MHz in the specs, it came clocked at 200MHz for me, which is faster than listed obviously. I was wondering why they listed 183MHz, as the board uses 5ns SDRAM, which equates to 200MHz. They may have just made a mistake. Either way the 5ns, 200MHz capable memory means that the eVGA memory runs a full 34MHz faster than NVIDIA's reference. That 34MHz makes a big difference in bandwidth..."

The Overclocker Cafe just finished their review of the ThermalRight SK6 cooler! Here's a clip - "The clip is a pretty straight forward looking latch job at a glance.  But only at a glance.  We really need to applaud the engineers over at ThermalRight.  One of the catches has an elbow, so that when you go to latch it down with a screwdriver you can actually manipulate the catch back and forth on and off of the mainboard catch to avoid the entire fishing in a second screwdriver thing.  We found the clip to work one hell of a lot better then it looked to us initially."

Bluetooth Digital Pen!       05:10 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Here's something I got in my mail from 4th WAVE! Ericsson just announced a digital pen that allows you to write on paper and digitally at the same time! Can you say wow? Here's the whole enchilada! :-

Ericsson has announced a digital pen called the Chatpen CHA-30, which takes advantage of Bluetooth wireless technology and the GPRS network to transfer handwritten text and interact with mobile phones, computers and the Internet. The product is scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2002, though a limited pre-launch in association with Europolitan-Vodafone will take place in Sweden during the fourth quarter of 2001.

Though it looks and writes like a normal pen, Chatpen also "reads" its location with the help of an almost invisible dot pattern printed on ordinary paper. This information is sent via Bluetooth and a GPRS mobile phone, letting consumers write on paper and digitally at the same time.

Consumers will also find that they are no longer restricted to text-based SMS or e-mail, but can send handwritten notes with Chatpen to anyone with a mobile phone, PC or PDA. Anything that can be drawn or written can be sent, making messaging more personal and simplifying the process of sending text in languages that do not use the Roman alphabet.

Though simple in appearance and function, Chatpen contains technology that includes an infrared camera, an image processor and a Bluetooth wireless transceiver. When writing with Chatpen on paper that features a subtle pattern of dots developed and owned by Anoto AB, these hidden components "read" the pen's location. This information is sent via Bluetooth wireless technology to a mobile phone, which then passes it via GPRS to another mobile phone, a PC or a PDA. Anoto AB is a subsidiary of C-Technologies.

According to Ericsson, the Chatpen will be an extension of its Chatboard - a keyboard that can be attached to a mobile phone, allowing users to send instant messages, faxes and e-mail.

Two URLs       04:30 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

Many visitors and other webmasters have reported to me that they haven't been able to access this site for over a week now. That's really weird as we have already resolved the bandwidth issue. But it appears that some DNS servers have had their cache corrupted or something.

The good news is that the problem appears to be affecting only www.rojakpot.com. www.adriansrojakpot.com will still work properly for all users. So, please spread the word around that if anyone faces any problem accessing Adrian's Rojak Pot using the shorter URL www.rojakpot.com, they should try www.adriansrojakpot.com instead.

Thanks! :)

Trio-1 Review Updated!       03:10 AM IDT     Adrian Wong

After releasing the definitive review of PDA Panache's Trio-1 Triple-Function Stylus, I e-mailed PDA Panache, asking for their opinion of the review. Their response was quite startling. This goes to show that you never know what you are going to get whenever you ask a manufacturer to comment on your review. ;)

Rizenet reviewed the AGP AirLift cooler from HighSpeedPC! Here's their blurb - "Though made from seemingly basic parts, it provided us with an amazing 6.3° C drop on our VisionTek GeForce3 board, which was already cooled with a modified Blue Orb!"

Maximum Reboot just posted their first review - 3D Studio Max 4! Here's a snip - 'After you install 3ds max 4 and open it up for the first time you feel rather at home. The interface seems to look pretty similar to previous releases, but what meets the eyes can be rather deceiving. First off is something that I really appreciated being a LightWave user as well is the now resizable windows. This is something I have been waiting for. It makes working between windows extremely easy. You can easily resize a window if you need a little more room to work with it."

GideonTech just received a MSConfig for Win2K from one of their visitors! It actually comes from WinXP but they say it will work with Win2K. I don't know but it's worth a try! :)
