64MB ACE CF Card Review!

Ken Ng and I recently bought 32MB and 64MB ACE CompactFlash
cards for our Pocket PCs. Ken will be working on the review of
his 32MB CompactFlash card right after his coming exams. In the
meantime, check out my review of the 64MB
ACE CompactFlash memory card from EC-Asia International
of Singapore!
Here's a clip of that review :-
"These cards are based on flash memory technology which is
non-volatile. That means it does not require power to retain its
data. As such, it will not lose data even if disconnected from the
host device or any power source. This is completely opposite of
volatile memory technologies like SDRAM and RDRAM, where the
memory cells have to be periodically refreshed to retain their
contents."

More Explorer Shortcut Tips!
04:55 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
Okay! Here it is! Rev. 2.6 of the Windows
2000 Hints & Tips Guide is now up with the following
changes :-
- Added two new tips on how to configure the Windows Explorer
shortcut to display My Computer.
- Added another way to get Windows Explorer to display the
Main Drive with the Folders bar.
- Added the registry entries in text so that the creation of the registry
file can be a simple matter of cut and paste instead of manual typing which may produce errors.
Do send in any other Win2K tips you may have! I've been
getting requests (both via e-mail and in the forums)
for a tip on how to change the Win2K splash screen. If you know
how to change it, please send me the details so I can add the
tip to the guide. Thanks! :)

BTW, if you are an editor or webmaster of another computing

Win2K Problems
04:00 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
Hello everyone!
Sorry for not appearing yesterday but my Win2K installation
inexplicably ate itself! It was working just fine on Thursday
but when I booted it up on Friday, it refused to finish
initializing and gave me a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) with the
error message that the registry cannot load the hive file blah
blah... \System32\Config\SOFTWARE, its alternate or its log file
because it's been corrupted, deleted or cannot be written to.
Note that SOFTWARE above is the name of the file and not
another directory. It appears to store registry entries for all
the software you install. Anyway, I spent the whole Friday
trying out different repair options but none work. The alternate
I found - SOFTWARE.SAV allowed me to boot but after loading
Network settings, it would continuously loop Loading user
settings and Saving user settings.
Finally, after many, many hours of playing with Win2K and
reinstalling it twice, I found a workable copy of SOFTWARE in
the \WINNT\Repair directory. Phew! Got my Win2K installation
running at last... Lucky me. :D
Anyway, I have a new update for the Windows
2000 Hints & Tips Guide today. Gotta take a few
minutes to clear a few e-mails and post the updates. So, if you
don't see it later today, just refresh this page.

GAPI Benchmark 1.0!
05:25 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
If you own a Pocket PC, you will be happy to note that
another benchmark is now available! This new benchmark by Javier
Dávalos tests the GAPI (Game API) performance of the Pocket PC.
Although beta versions of this benchmark were released previously,
the final release is now available right here!
In addition,
Javier is now part of the ARP team and will be working with the
rest of the team to further develop this exciting new benchmark.
In the future, this benchmark will not only test the GAPI
performance of Pocket PCs but also other aspects like CPU speed,
memory access speed and even transfer rates through the serial and
USB connections as well as between the Pocket PC and add-on cards. If
you have suggestions on how to further improve this benchmark, do let
us know! We would appreciate any comments and suggestions
you may have.
In the meantime, check out the documentation
on this benchmark!

ARP Under Attack!
04:15 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
Would you believe it??? Adrian's Rojak Pot was actually hit
by a massive Denial Of Service attack! Luckily, our host
and guardian angel (mua! mua! mua!!!), Crowz,
caught it and prevented them from crashing the server.
Unfortunately, after 31GB of bandwidth worth about USD
28,000 was lost to the attackers, Crowz was forced to cut
the line. But as you can see, ARP is back on its feet and
running again at 100% capacity!
I have no idea why these people did what they did. All we
have now is a bunch of IPs recorded during the attack. As far as
we can tell, about 50 people from countries like Spain, Russia,
Germany and... NORWAY were attacking this site since 1:48 AM US
Central Time till about 3:00 AM when Crowz shut ARP down.
Right now, let's not speculate on their motives in trying to
bring down ARP. Although I don't think we have pissed off that
many people, it's hard to believe we were randomly selected. We
are now gathering more information so hopefully, we will have a
clearer picture of why we were hit.
If you have an idea why we were attacked, do drop
me a message. I think it's quite probable this was all
planned and coordinated in an open forum. It's rather hard to orchestrate
50 people from various countries through just e-mail, isn't it? ;)

Senfu Thermometer
02:30 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
Ever wanted to keep track of your CPU or graphics chip
temperature while you are working? Well, you can use software
monitoring utilities but what if your motherboard doesn't come
with temperature monitoring support? Or what if you want to
measure the temperature of a component which your motherboard
cannot?
Well, try an external thermal probe! Today, we have a short
review of the Senfu
thermometer which is designed for PC use. Overclockers
will find it a very useful aid in monitoring critical components
and making sure they don't go supernova! Check it out! :)

news about the leaked NVIDIA v10.50 drivers :-
- v10.50 is a little bit faster in D3D
- The difference between the drivers is a bit larger when
Bump Mapping is used
- v6.50 slow down dramatically when DirectX 8.0a is used
instead of DirectX 7. V10.50 do not show this effect.
- v10.50 seem to have some Problems in Evolva at the
Resolution 1024x768-16
- v10.50 are a lot slower in D3D 2x2 FSAA (If 2x2 in the
new drivers means the same than 2x2 in the old drivers)
- With current games and drivers there seems to be no
difference between DirectX 7 and DirectX 8

Javier has just done the "impossible"! While many
people have said that PocketQuake will only be playable on
Pocket PCs that are not using the Intel StrongARM processor,
Javier has actually made PocketQuake work on Pocket PCs based on
the MIPS processors!
His tweaked version of PocketQuake can now be downloaded here!
It will run on all Pocket PCs using the MIPS processor.

Casio Update Pack!!!
03:10 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
I'm not sure if you all know this but Casio has just released
Update
Pack version 1.01 for their Pocket PCs. It fixes quite a
few bugs as well as improve the display speed! Unfortunately,
the Update Pack will only work on these Casio Pocket PCs :-
- EM-500/500G
- E-125/125G
- EM-505F/505I/505S
As such, you should also state if you have installed the
update pack or not when submitting benchmark numbers for the Pocket
PC Performance Comparison. Thanks! :)

ViewQuest VQ630 Review!
07:20 AM IDT Adrian
Wong
Here's the first review by Maesus, one of Team ARP's
newest members! And no, it's not about a
monitor... The ViewQuest
VQ630 is a dual mode digital camera which will function
both as a normal digital camera as well as a webcam! What's so
special about this camera?
The clincher, I would say, is that this camera has been
chosen by Intel to be its Pocket PC Camera! So, if you want to
see why Intel chose this camera, check out the review!
